Florida historian and ( just) retired University of South Florida professor Gary Mormino explored 500 Years of Eating in Florida with an attentive Tampa audience enjoying part of a week’s programming in October 2012 on “Florida’s Hispanic Heritage.” ( Ponce de Leon touched Florida for the first time in 1513, so…)  The remarkable impact of the exchange of foods between hemispheres was on the menu, as was Tampa’s iconic guava pastry, via the Columbia Restaurant, Florida’s oldest, established in 1905 in Ybor City. Guava from the Americas, and wheat/dairy/eggs from the other side=exchange.
