Florida Fresh & Other Slices

Many people don't know what old Florida was like so I want to show you all that's historic, beautiful, retro, kitschy and untamed. Much of it has changed now, but you can still be a part of the adventure if you look in the right places. I love writing about Florida and submissions are always welcomed.

Enjoy your stay in the F.L.A.

I must take a moment to wish a happy BIG 18th birthday to our daughter Iris <3. We love you very much, so here is your official birthday advice:
1-Now you’re 18 and technically an adult, please know that age doesn’t automatically mean maturity. Heck just look at some of our friends..;)
2-You have the right to vote now, but that’s your decision to make. Go with your gut and keep yourself informed. If you don’t vote then be sure you can justify your non-action. I really hope you find a cause to be passionate about and work for change.
3-The world is magical and beautiful, be present in the moment and surrender to joy. Have faith in something, whatever it may be, let your spirit guide you.
4-The world can be cruel and deceptive. Remember that party where you drank Smirnoff Ice because you wanted to fit in, but had too much because it was “refreshing”?. It etched a stain on our hardwood floor and you learned a valuable lesson. Don’t drink in excess and if you do - don’t mix. I know teenagers are going to try things, but remember the seeds of addiction are planted early and they can ruin your entire life.
5-Surround yourself with good people. Not everyone will have your best interest in mind so think “quality” not “quantity” when it comes to friends. Know the difference between trusting your instinct or if you’re just being judgmental. I’m afraid that only negative life encounters will help polish that skill so be ready.
6- Art, art and more art.
7- Music, music and more music.
8-Please no dumb tattoos, you have to live with that stuff. Like the faded smiley face on my arm, yeah, love looking at that every day. It’s smiling at me right now. If your buddy shows up saying “hey lets get drunk and give each other tattoos!!”, run away fast.
9-Find a partner that makes you laugh, looks you in the eye and treats you with respect. If they can put up a tent and change flat tire then it’s a bonus. Good relationships are like a fine set of pearls. Cherish each one, value them, but even if they are shiny none are totally perfect. If you neglect them they will turn to dust. As for the bad ones, I keep a crossbow in the bottom left drawer. (wink)
and finally..
10-No matter what you achieve, the things you buy, places you travel, they won’t mean much if you don’t have love for someone or something in your life. Open your heart now because changes lie around every corner and tomorrow is promised to no one.
Always, your parents.
